LIVE AT THE STONE / NYC by David Franklin An acclaimed so-called outlaw poet, Weber writes for real people and his work is very accessible. In accompanying him in this live setting, the ensemble’s music is frequently programmatic, as when they evoke a blustery Southwestern wind in “On Breathing Down the Spine” or on “From Odyssey,” Weber’s take on the Homer classic, where altoist Richard Tabnik makes sounds that suggest the cries of a whale. Both bassist Filiano and drummer Mancuso are experienced professionals who play their respective roles with aplomb.
